Dear Editor,
I sat next to a young schoolgirl this morning (30-11-09) in the bus, and subsequently helped to pay her bus fare.
She was quiet all the way and I suspected something was wrong – when I asked her if she had breakfast she said no. So I asked her again, you didn’t eat breakfast at all this morning? She said “No”. My heart went out to this child. I gave her money to buy something to eat and hugged and encouraged her.
My suggestion to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Human Services is that a joint and collaborative effort, be made for schoolchildren, especially those coming out of poverty or even homes where there is neglect, be provided for with a meal or two.
This is extremely necessary and needed! Since such a situation can push young girls to prostituting themselves for money, etc, and young boys to get involved in crime for the reason of meeting their basic needs!
God help us and this society.
