‘The Flame and the Ribbon’ set for NCC tonight

Today Guyana joins the world in observing World AIDS Day with various forms of exhibitions and showcases and theatre lovers will not be left out. Through an initiative that began in 1992, Artistes in Direct Support (AIDS), are set to stage a play titled ‘Don’t test me’ at the National Cultural Centre.
There is no admission fee attached but it is a ticketed event and persons who venture to the venue will have to collect tickets from the National Cultural Centre.
Desiree Edghill, director of AIDS, who penned and directed the play, said the evening will be one of soul searching edutainment of a serious nature as the members of the Artistes in Direct Support stage their annual Flame and the Ribbon.
From 19:00hrs the ceremonial flames would be lit in the form of candles in remembrance and in support of persons living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, then at 20:00hrs the stage play will begin. Edghill said “We want everyone to come out with their candles to show their support because it could happen to anyone.”
She said “the candle lighting ceremony is done so that persons can light a candle for family, relatives and friends infected and affected by HIV or in memory of those who died as a result of HIV.”
The play is developed against the backdrop of the World AIDS Day theme ‘Universal access and human rights’, and Edghill said “we are dealing with finding out that you are HIV positive after getting married.”
The cast includes Kijana Lewis who plays the lead male role while Lavern Fredericks is the lead female actress. The other actors are Clemencio Goddet, Merica George, Cilandel Glen, Tisha Levius, Abiola Kirton and Aewha Accra. World AIDS Day provides the opportunity for individuals, communities and political leaders to take action and ensure that human rights are protected and global targets for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care are met.
