Preparations are moving apace for the grand end of year one day horserace meet organised by the Port Mourant Turf Club, which is slated for Sunday December 13.
So far a number of cooperate entities have come on board, including Banks DIH Limited, Digicel and Republic Bank, while a few others are in the process of certifying their involvement.
The facility, in the meanwhile is being spruced up with another bout of rehabilitation work being undertaken at the moment in an effort to making the facility the number one in the country. The track is being up graded and the grand stand is being further refurbished so that Turfites can be even more comfortable as they enjoy the King of sports.
Most of the top horses in the country have already taken entry and reports out of the Port Mourant Turf Club states that only limited spaces are available, with entries filling up at a rapid pace.
Competitors will be vying for over $2.5 million dollars, which will be available in cash, trophies and other attractive prizes. Entries closed on Sunday December 6.
The feature event is for B class horses and has a sumptuous winner’s purse of $350,000 with the animals slated to compete over a mile.
The 3yr old match up will be for animals born and bred in Guyana and the West Indies and once again will see the best 3yr olds in the country clashing. The winning prize is $250,000 and the distance is six and a half furlongs.
The F Class race will see the winner taking home $200,000 in another six furlong event, as usual the entries for this event is almost complete. The Two-year-old encounter is also for horses born and bred in Guyana and the West Indies. The horses will be trying to out do each other over six furlongs for the $180,000 first prize on offer.
The ‘I’ class event will see the winner taking away the $120,000 first prize in the seven furlong race.
There are two other exciting races on the day’s card, although lower in class they will not be lacking in excitement. Horses competing in the ‘I’ 3 maidens 3-year-old open with a first prize of $110,000 will be competing over six furlongs.
The division 2&3 race that has a winning prize of $100,000 is another six furlong encounter.
Businessman Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall in Bourda Market will once again be donating the individual prizes, which will go to the champion jockey, champion trainer and champion stables among others.
The day’s activity will be conducted under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA).
