‘Army Power’ versus ‘Hammer Power’, one must fall as GDF face Alpha
By Franklin Wilson
When the whistle is sounded for the start of what is expected to be a battle like no other, both teams contesting the final of the Guyana Football Federation National Super League Championship will be aiming to take the early advantage.
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United will start with the Psychological advantage having been involved in almost all the football finals in Guyana but that fact will not in any way intimidate their opponents, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), who are equally confident that they possess the requisite artillery to down the Hammer.
Alpha on any given night can be very destructive, possessing an almost look alike National Team line up but the Soldiers have been encamped for the past week or so and Alpha can expect a tough and fit GDF, running at them for the start of the contest.
While Alpha were taken to the brink in their extra time 3-2 semi-final win over Milerock, the GDF were very dismissive of Sunburst Camptown in their battle. Ever since those matches more than a week ago, both sides have been hard at preparing for tonight’s finale and fans and supporters are in for a great treat.
Finishing will be the key area for both sides as well as airtight defending since any lapses can put either side under tremendous pressure. GDF coach Marlon Washington did disclose that they are putting extra efforts into the area of finishing, fitness and defending.
Alpha’s Head Coach Clifton Bobb did acknowledge that his charges are better equipped technically but will not take the Army boys for granted as they are a fit unit.
He said he will ensure that their defence is much tighter against the GDF while his front line will exhibit more hunger as they seek to put away their opponents early.
To achieve this objective, Alpha will rely on Captain Howard Lowe, Abassi McPherson, Anthony Harding, Kelvin McKenzie, Shawn Bishop, Quincy Madramootoo, Edison Gomes, Dwight Peters, Dwain Jacobs Andrew Murray, Philbert Moffatt, Kevin and Kelvin Smith, Gordon Henry and goal keeper Ronson Williams.
GDF’s charge will be led by the strike force of Delroy Deen, Hubert Pedro, Seon Brewley, Stellon David and Steven Dolphin.
Eusi Philips, Warren Gilkes and Marlon Benjamin will be in charge of the engine room (midfield) with assistance from Kevin Lewis, Keiron Joseph, Desford Williams and Shavane Seaforth while the defence will be marshaled by Seon Prince, Royan Morrison, Keon Adams, Devon Harris, Sheik Kamal and Ryan Adolph along with custodian, Delon Young.
The third place game is also expected to produce its own fireworks when Sunburst Camptown, who will be under strength, opposes Linden’s Milerock.
A victory for either team will boost their confidence ahead of the 20th Kashif and Shanghai tournament set to kick off on December 13th.
Linden’s challenge will be spearheaded by their Captain Marlon Maxius, Derrol Dainty, Randy Jerome, Trevor Tudor, Kevin Sullivan, Deon Grandison, Jermaine Mc Bean, Ray Bobb-Semple and goalie Michael Rose.
Camptown who will be without the services of the seasoned Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod who was handed a 3-match suspension for spitting on an opposing player, Captain Orlando Gilgeous received a 1-game ban for using abusive language to the referee, will rely on the likes of Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington, Telson McKinnon, Lance Rolston, Adrian Adonis, Anthony Belfield, Bevon Moseley, Giovanni Leitch, Chris Camacho, Jahal Greaves, King Archer and Reshawn Sandiford to lead their quest for victory.
This afternoon’s action will commence with a clash featuring the National Under-20 side playing a select Super League Rest Team from 15:00hrs.
