NL Cavaliers, MSC locked in tight battle for full points
By Sean Devers
National under-19 left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun befuddled the batsmen yesterday at the DCC ground and his 14 out of the 17 wickets that have fallen for Lusignan have left the home team in an almost impregnable position to win outright on the final day of their Demerara zone 3-day GCB National 1st division cricket competition today.
The 19-year-old Bishun followed up his 9-69 in the 1st innings with 5-30 as Lusignan, set 121 to avoid an innings defeat, struggled to 153-7 in their 2nd innings enjoying a slim lead of 32 runs going into today’s final day.
And in the other match yesterday at the Canal Number 2 ground, former West Indies leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo grabbed 5-81 to put New Line Cavaliers in a good position to force an outright win against Malteenoes Sports Club after Danny Narayan fell 17 short of a century as MSC took 1st innings points earlier in the day.
At DCC, Lusignan made 234 with Harrinarine Hera (60) and Krishna Deosarran (51) getting fifties as Bishun mesmerized the batsmen with his chinamans and googlies.
Kevin George hit his maiden first division century (109) and got support from Omesh Danram (55) and National player Chris Barnwell (38) as DCC replied with 355 to take first innings points. Emran Khan took 6-50 for the East Coast team.
Deosarran was again among the runs with 47 and got support from Vishnu Ramjit (23) and Hera (21) as Bishun and leg-spinner Danram (2 wickets) left Lusignan wobbling on the ropes at the end of the penultimate day.
In West Bank Demerara, MSC replying to NLC’s 186 slipped from their overnight 82-1 to 204 all to claim an 18-run lead as Nagamootoo took 5-81 from 37 overs and got support from Berbice medium pacer Paul Wintz (3-29).
Steven Jacobs added just 2 to his 1st day 44 before he was bowled by Wintz while Deon Ferrier (6) was controversially run out as Wintz impeded the path of Narayan on his follow through.
Nagamootoo quickly got rid of Orin Forde (0) and Kelon Carmichael (7) while Randy Lindore (5) edged Wintz to the keeper as MSC lost their way on a track with prodigious turn for the spinners.
Damien Vantull (14) played no shot to a big turning leg break and was bowled middle stump while Carlos LaRose (17) was taken at silly point off Nagamootoo who also induced Narayan, who hit 9 fours and a six from 193 balls, to slip.
The hosts, who beat DCC in their debut 3-day first division match, galloped to 27-0 off 2 overs by lunch and after the interval Andre Lyght Junior, who hit 2 sixes and a four in his 17-ball 24, again demonstrated very little brain power as he pounded medium pacer Carmichael to Vantull on the cover boundary after Cohen Esmond (13) fell to a lose cut at 32-1.
Jacobs, extracting lots of bounce and turn, got rid of Andre Percival (11) and Anthony Ifill (0) with the score on 100, while 6 runs later the left-handed Gajanand Singh charged down the track to Ferrier and was bowled for 43 with 3 fours and a six.
Wintz (9) and Balram Samaroo (7) then battled grimly to the close as their team head into the final day on 121-5 with a lead of 103.
