National left-handed batsman Gajanand Singh celebrated his inclusion in the Guyana first Class training squad with a Man-of-the-Match performance yesterday to lead Canal Number 2 Sports Club to championship honours in the New Line Aqua Farm West Demerara cricket competition.
The 22-year-old Singh, a former West Indies under-19 player with five 1st class matches to his name, hit 6 fours and 4 sixes in his attractive unbeaten 54 from 31 balls on the small Canal Number 2 ground to spearhead the home team to 77-3 from 10.3 overs after he had taken 2-1 with his off-spin to help bundle out Cultural Sports Club for 70 in 25.1 overs in yesterday’s Final.
Asked to bat first in sultry conditions on a slow track, Cultural were never in the fight after Budan Baksh, whop reached the boundary 3 times, departed for a top score of 20.
Only Avinash Sookdeo of the other batsmen offered any resistance and once the Demerara youth player was sent packing for 14 with 2 fours, the innings went into decline as the much more experienced Canal Number 2 line-up dominated the entire match.
Singh, one of the several Berbicans plying their trade at Canal Number 2 cricket, wrapped up the innings from just 1.1 overs after former Berbcie, Guyana and West Indies under-19 Skipper Andre Percival had taken 2-4 from 4 economical overs on a track which offered turn for the spinners.
Davendra Ramataur (2-29 from 6 overs) was also among the wickets for the hosts who galloped to victory with plenty of overs to spare despite losing Maxwell Fraser (1), Chabiray Ramcharran (10) and John Champayne for a duck.
Singh, who now plays for Demerara at the County level, batted with consummate ease and delighted the vocal crowd with an array of enterprising shots as he raced to his half-century.
Fellow Berbician Farouk Hussain (6*) was the other unbeaten batsman when victory was achieved.
Canal Number 2 SC collected a beautiful trophy and $100,000 while Cultural had to settle for the $50,000 runner-up prize.
