Abigail McDonald has started her quest for honours at the World Scrabble championships and has experienced mixed fortunes.
To date, she has managed to put up a strong battle and in her first game managed to defeat Marc Roddis of Sweden by a spread of 81 after amassing 369 to the Swedish player’s 288. She then dropped her second round game to Pakistan’s Rodney Judd by a spread of 90. Her second loss followed soon afterwards to Australian, David Eldar before she rebounded with a win over Herve Bohbot (France) by a narrow spread of 10. S
She then dropped her fifth round encounter against Englishwoman, Lewis Mackay. She scored 428 while her opponent scored 449. She then rebounded with a sixth round victory over Michael Tang of Malaysia by a spread of 160. Her fortunes dipped once again with a huge loss (125) to South African, Trevor Mark Hovelmeier. She suffered another loss this time in the eighth round to American Jason Katz Brown to 526 (a spread of -209).
The Guyanese then prevailed over Trinidadian Leslie Charles by a spread of 78. Kenyan, Allan Oyende was McDonald’s next victim by a narrow spread of 25 moments before she surrendered to Waseem Khatri by a spread of 177.
She fared no better in her match against Ni gerian Chinedu Nosike Okwelogu and lost by a spread of 43. She then earned a draw against Theresa Brousson before surrendering another game to New Zealander, Jeff Grant. She also lost to Japanese Mihai Pantis and Rodney Judd. The tournament concludes sometime today and we would be better able to inform of the respective places.
