Kashif and Shanghai recognised for selfless service to football
Mc Rae’s Supermarket of Linden awards them with huge trophy

The outstanding contributions that the Linden duo of Kashif and Shanghai has made to the development of football in Guyana have been recognized by Linden Establishment, Mc Rae’s Supermarket of Amelia’s Ward.
Managing Director of the Supermarket Bryan Mc Rae in presenting a huge trophy to the pair for their extensive work in promoting football in Guyana and overseas, said that he was particularly proud that both Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major were fellow Lindeners.
“I want to recognize their contributions to the development of the game and sports in Guyana over the past 20 years. They are undoubtedly the best promoters in Guyana and of course they are from Linden and I think they are a special pair.”
The Kashif and Shanghai tournament which had a humble start in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden in December of 1990 saw Milerock defeating Eagles United in the final on New Year’s 1991.
The tournament has grown from strength to strength over the years with overseas teams also coming to compete against the best local teams. It has now become a permanent fixture on the sporting calendar in Guyana and attracts the largest football crowds in the country.
The Kashif and Shanghai group has the distinction of being the first local promoters in the sporting arena to pack the Guyana National Stadium Providence to capacity, the last final between eventual champions Pele and Sunburst Camptown attracting over 15,000 spectators.
This year, for the 20th Anniversary tournament, plans are in the final stages for the visit of the world’s greatest footballer, King Pele of Brazil to be the Special guest of honour at the grand opening set for Sunday December 13 at the Stadium.
The Guyana Football Federation has also given the go ahead for Twenty Teams to participate in the knock-out tournament where games will be played at the Stadium, Georgetown Football Club ground, Enmore, Blairmont and the inaugural ground, Mackenzie Sports Club.
The Kashif and Shanghai tournament is also played in St Lucia for the past three years.
