Dare Devils defeated Rude boys by 5 wickets in the final of the Wakenaam Night Management Committee 10 overs softball cricket competition played under lights last weekend at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground in Good Success.
Rude boys won the toss and elected to bat first in front of a large and colourful crowd which included Miss Wakenaam 2009, Mandy Jairam, and managed 118 all out off their 10 overs.
Chandreka Ragnauth led with 48 while Gurnauth Khemraj supported with 23, Vinood Ramadeen and Wazir Khan took two wickets each. Daredevils responded with 119 -5 in 9.5 overs. Tulsieram Ramadeen was their leading run getter with 63. Abdool Salim and Macksood Khatweeb grabbed two wickets each for runner up Rude Boys.
Daredevils collected the winning prize of $10,000 from Miss Wakenaam 2009, Mandy Jairam. Speaking at the simple ceremony after the final, Secretary of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee Zaheer Mohamed congratulated the teams for reaching the final. He also thanked Wakenaam Night Management Committee for organising the competition and the crowd for their support, stating that this was the first time cricket was played under lights on the island.
In the semi-finals, Daredevils overcame Knight Riders and Rude boys got pass Cavaliers. Bank Hall x1 was the other team in the competition.
Scores in the semi-finals:
Knight Riders (44 all out in 10 overs (Tulsieram Ramadeen 2-15, Faheem Azweem 2-26, Imran Khan 2-18) lost to Dare Devils 77-4 in 7 overs (T. Ramadeen 30, Avinash Jairam 2-25).
Rude boys 139 – 2 in 10 overs (Chandreka Ragnauth 62, Abdool Salim 53, Oyono Sampson 30) beat Cavaliers 101 – 6 in 10 overs. (Ricardo Adams 29, Yashpaul Kunjbeharry 26, Macksood Khatweeb 3-25, Jaggernauth Manbodh 3-24).
Meanwhile, Gun down won the Domino competition by defeating All Star and Melville in the final at the same venue. Gun down totalled 74 games with Pampo Narine getting 12.
Runner up All Star marked 70 games. Mankad Dinban led with 15. Melville came third with 67. Anand Dhanyshore was their leading player with 18 games, while his teammate Khalid Zaman was the lone bird.
Gun down collected the winning trophy while All Star took the runner up prize. Dhanyshore was the competition’s most valuable player. He received $5,000 for his effort.
In the semi-final Melville overcame All Star and Seawall boys. Scores, Melville 80 games (Anand Dhanyshore 17) All Star 71 (Tom Singh 17) Seawall boys 70 (David Ramlall 15).
