Floyd Carmichael traveled all the way from the Ancient County to stake a claim for the Eid ul Adha trophy when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged that tournament in the pavilion of the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground yesterday morning.
At the end of six hectic rounds, he managed to clinch the premium prize after compiling an impeccable 6 points and a positive spread of 656.
From the onset Carmichael made his intentions clear with a victory over Prudence Edwards by an even hundred. Kamta Ramnarine offered him fierce opposition in his second game but Carmichael eventually eked past him by a slim spread of 20.
Nicholas Grant was not so fortunate and suffered a post lunch drubbing by a spread of 189.
Former national champion, Fred Collins also stayed in contention for top honours and at the end of the morning sessions had compiled three games with a positive spread of 356.
The imminent clash between Carmichael and Collins, the two leaders at the lunch interval, occurred just after the lunch interval and after an intense hour where both demonstrated cunning and determination, Carmichael prevailed by a mighty spread of 156. Afterwards, it was smooth sailing for the eventual winner as he disposed of Leon Belony (161) and Ulric Harris (30) to march off with the top prize.
James Krakowsky bounced back from a first round loss to Carlton Murray (39) and another to Leon Belony (120) to claim the second place spot.
He defeated Orlando Michael (100), Grace Hercules (244), Julian Skeete (264) and Fred Collins (10) to finish with 4 games and a positive spread of 459. Orlando Michael sealed off the podium spots after defeating Belony (13), Keith Allicock (24), Nicholas Grant (301) and Carlton Murray (90). He amassed four games and a positive spread of 309.
The top three players won trophies donated by the business community. The players convene for another tournament, the Metro Lien trophy, on December 13 next. Practice sessions are held every Thursday evening at the Maltenoes Cricket Club, Thomaslands every Thursday from 18:00hrs.
