-takes on lower-ranked
club in First ‘D’ clash
By Edison Jefford
Trainer of Georgetown’s number one ranked, Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club, Robert Cadogan says that while he will not be coaching the team tonight, he does not expect the club to take Beepat’s Scorpions for granted.
Scorpions are currently ranked sixth in Georgetown and will meet Courts Pacesetters in the featured First Division game tonight in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) season-opening Knockout competition.
The game tonight will be one of the encounters to decide who takes on Ravens in a semi-final game tomorrow night. The other was the Pepsi Sonics and Panthers game last night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Since Georgetown has ten First Division teams, five qualified for the second round with the one that scored the most points getting the bye to one of the semi-finals. Ravens won emphatically against Eagles to get that nod.
The teams that scored the lowest from the Pacesetters/Scorpions and Sonics/Panthers match-ups will play Ravens while the winner of the highest scoring game from those two encounters automatically qualify for Sunday night’s Final.
The higher ranked Pacesetters will enter tonight’s game as favourites but a set of dogged injuries may affect their general performance. Their national players, Naylon Loncke and Stephon Gillis are both out of the squad tonight.
“As their trainer and former coach, Pacesetters have to come out and play their game and not get too frustrated. We have a winning formula that we use and once we stick to that, it shouldn’t be a problem,” Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport.
He revealed yesterday that veteran local basketball statistician and Pacesetters Chairman, Dennis Clarke took over as Coach. He believes that Scorpions have done their homework and cannot be taken lightly because they have shopped.
“Scorpions have done their homework and have recruited some talented players. (Alwyn) Bellamy and Quincy Heywood are just to name two of them. But they have done some of the necessary things in basketball,” Cadogan believes.
Scorpions long-serving Head Coach, Vijay Panday said that he prefers to let the outcome of the game, which he believes will be in their favour, to do the “talking” because his side has proven that they belong among the best clubs.
“I am not talking much. I will let my players do the talking when they do their thing. I am just doing what I have to do, but I believe the time has come for a new set of clubs to take over in Georgetown,” Panday said with conviction.
The Beepat’s Scorpions’ Coach said that he knows that Pacesetters have been putting in a lot of hard work ahead of the tournament, but thinks that he has a psychological edge and tactical advantage with his newly recruited players.
“We did well in the Kevin Worrel Memorial tournament and though it was some different kinds of basketball (seven-a-side), it gave us some psychological advantage. We just have to go out there and play our natural game,” Panday noted.
Melanie Patriots take on Sonics in the Third Division preceding semi-final game tonight in the GABA Knockout Tournament.
