Best in Georgetown, Linden on the cards
In a proactive move to continue with the development of basketball in Georgetown, there is a national Super-Eight Inter-Ward Basketball Championships in the minds of the hierarchy within the sub-association of the Garden City.
Kaieteur Sport is aware that the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) is currently putting the final preparations in place to launch the national inter-ward tourney to proliferate the sport in Georgetown.
A source close to the sub-association said that basketball will not cease in Georgetown in the 2009/10 Season because of a programme that was set to keep players and clubs active throughout the second year of the new Executive.
“The idea behind this is to continue with the development of basketball. We want to also raise funds for the rehabilitation of Burnham Basketball Court because we do not want to restrict the game to the indoor venue,” the source said.
“It is pretty expensive to continue playing our entire season in the Sports Hall. Burnham Court is not in any shape to play right now. We want to do rehabilitation works because that is our (GABA) Headquarters,” the informant continued.
This newspaper understands that the plan is to make the National Inter-Ward an annual fixture on the GABA calendar of events. The source indicated that there are sponsors but it is too early in the negotiation phase to reveal them.
The top three teams in the well-attended Georgetown Inter-Ward contest this year, North Ruimveldt, Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust and Albouystown/Charlestown will take on the top two in Linden, Central Mackenzie and Christianburg.
Additionally, it was disclosed that the other teams that will make up the eight include the East Coast Combined, East Bank Combined and New Amsterdam. The GABA is aiming for a December 12 commencement of the competition.
