Three secondary students on the Essequibo Coast are currently away from school as the police and the Education Department have launched a probe into the discovery of drugs on their person.
This newspaper was told that the three students, two females and a male, were at school on Tuesday with small quantities of marijuana.
Reports reaching this newspaper are that teachers were informed of the development. The matter was reported to the Education Department and subsequently to the police.
Upon arrival at the school, the lawmen conducted searches on the trio and sources say the drugs were found in the students’ haversacks.
The students were taken to a police station where they spent the night and were then released into the custody of their parents.
The police and the Education Department are currently investigating the matter.
Sources close to the investigation have stated that charges are likely to be laid as the related files have been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.
Meanwhile this newspaper has been informed that one of the female students involved in the matter was recently suspended from the school for another matter. All the students involved are said to be preparing for next year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations.
