Government says that it will be cracking down aggressively on the continued sale of pornographic videos and that offenders can face fines or jail time if caught.
In an advisory printed yesterday in Kaieteur News, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that it is teaming up with the police to “stamp out the sale of pornographic material (CDs, DVDs etc.) at public places and commercial enterprises in Guyana.”
This is not the first time that there has been a campaign. Officials had swooped down on a number of prominent DVD stores, seizing boxes of the highly popular porno videos.
While many of the outlets has stopped advertising that the videos are being sold, it did not deter them from covertly offering it if it is requested.
What makes it more lucrative is the fact that countless copies are made of the original then resold many times to ready buyers at prices above the normal rate of a DVD movie.
Yesterday, the price ranged from $400 to $500 per copy of a DVD video with some videos even being sold openly by some street vendors.
According to the Home Affairs Ministry, under the law, an offender can be anyone who trades, distribute, exhibit publicly, produce or import the material which includes obscene writing, drawing, printed matter, picture and poster.
Persons caught advertising pornographic material or assisting in its circulation may also be charged.
