Defending Kashif and Shanghai football champions Pele have taken their preparations for the upcoming event to the Lethem community and have been afforded the opportunity to clash with opposition from neighbouring world football powerhouse, Brazil.
Pele on Tuesday at the Lethem ground defeated leading Bon Fin side Barcelona from the neighbouring Brazilian border town 2-0 in their opening encounter. Konata Manning in the 60th and Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson in the 65th minutes ensured the city side’s win.
The game, watch by a large crowd of Lethem residents and supporters of the Brazilian club, who traveled with them, was played in blazing afternoon sunshine. Barcelona
controlled the lion’s share of ball possession for the first half, creating several opportunities, but could not penetrate the excellent Shemroy Arthur in goal.
Arthur pulled off several brilliant saves to deny the Brazilians as his team worked out any kinks and rust as they assessed their opponents.
The second stanza saw vintage Pele turn on the style and Manning it was that latched onto the ball a few yards out of the penalty area and cut loose with a thunderous right foot shot that Barcelona’s keeper had not chance in stopping.
Their fluidity and excelling passing game surprised the Brazilians as they seemed a transformed outfit. It didn’t take long for Pele to get on the score sheet a second time. On this occasion, the talented Richardson worked his way just outside the 18yard box and fired a rocket into the back of the net. The remainder of the contest failed to produce any other goals as the teams kept each other at bay, Pele controlling the action.
Pele will oppose a team made up of the leading players in the Lethem area from 3:30pm today as they continue preparation to defend the coveted Kashif and Shanghai title.
