Moore, Seeram retained as Manager/Coach
By Sean Devers
While the Guyana Cricket Board is yet to make an official announcement, it has been confirmed that Carl Moore and Rabindranauth Seeram have been retained as Manager and Coach respectively for the 2010 Regional First Season which begins in the first week of next year.
The 48-year-old Seeram, a former Guyana and West Indies ‘B’ team middle order batsman, averages 35.3 from 41 First Class games with 3 tons and 12 fifties between 1983 and 1991 and he is a Level 1 Coach.
The West Demerara resident was appointed Guyana senior team Coach in the middle of this year’s double round First Class season when he replaced the long-serving Albert Smith for the 6th round game against Jamaica. He was also the coach for the One-Day team which lost the final to Trinidad and Tobago.
Berbician Moore, the senior team Manager since 2003, informed that the 21-man squad, minus the 4 (Sarwan, Chanderpaul, Deonarine & Dowlin) in Australia, will begin their encampment in the city from Monday afternoon before breaking for the Christmas weekend. Guyana’s new Territorial Development Officer (TDO) Reon King, the former Test pacer, said a programme of encampment activities is being worked on with assistance from the Coach and should be completed by this week.
It is understood that during the first phase of the encampment period, the emphasis will be on fitness while Moore disclosed that the players will be allowed to play for their respective clubs on weekends in the Guyana Cricket Board national 3-day competition.
A WICB source also revealed that Guyana has drawn the bye for the first round of next year’s Regional 4-day first class competition which has again failed to attract a sponsor.
The WICB had recently stated that a Final would have been played after they cut the season in half from 12 to 6 matches per team but a senior WICB official says that idea has also been quashed and a Final will no longer be played as the WICB continue to thinker with the fixtures less than 2 months before the first ball is scheduled to be bowled.
“Guyana will not play in the first round in Jamaica and take on Trinidad and Tobago in St Kitts from January 12-15 in their first match before facing Jamaica in Barbados in their next game from January 22-25,” he informed.
The source added that while this should be the final fixtures, it was likely that it could be once again changed before the competition commences. Guyana will remain in Barbados to face the Windward Islands from January 29 to February 1 before returning home to face Barbados from February 12-15.
The Guyanese, without a title at this level since 2002 when they took 1st innings points from host Jamaica in the Busta International Shield final, travel to Trinidad to face the Leeward Islands from February 19-22 before moving to St Lucia for their final game against CCC from February 26-29.
Jamaica, who topped the points table in this year’s competition are the defending champions.
