As Christmas approaches the Guyana Defence Force has joined the ranks of those who give to the Salvation Army.
On Tuesday, the military continued its support for civil society organizations through the presentation of a sizeable cash donation to the Salvation Army to assist with the organisation’s 2009 Christmas programme.
Major Stanford, who made the presentation, said that the Force was pleased to be associated with the charitable work of the Salvation Army and expressed the hope that the GDF contribution will help to bring holiday cheer to many.
Commanding Officer, Citadel Corps, and National Youth Director of the Salvation Army in Guyana, Captain Vilece Thomas received the donation on behalf of his organization and expressed gratitude to the GDF for its timely contribution.
The Captain Thomas said that it was significant and will boost his organisation’s work during this Christmas season.
The Salvation Army, he said, usually distributes hampers to needy persons in communities throughout Guyana and this activity is usually more intensive at Christmas. He explained that the Salvation Army also conducts feeding programmes for school children, the elderly and homeless persons in Georgetown, Bartica and Linden. In addition it runs a well-organised drug rehabilitation programme in Georgetown.
The army in a statement said yesterday’s contribution demonstrates the GDF continued commitment to building social partnerships which mitigate against poverty and helps to alleviate the condition of the less fortunate in Guyana.
