Guyanese finish 10th overall in Telesur Srefidensi race
Fifty-four-year-old Guyanese Llewellyn Gardner successfully defended his Masters Marathon title when he finished in the over-45 category and 10th overall from 40 participants in last Saturday’s 26 mile Telesur Srefidensi Marathon in Paramaribo Suriname.
Gardner, who began running long distance events as a student at the Campbellville Secondary school, thanked his sponsors, especially Mrs Gaskin from COPS security Service for helping to make his trip possible and disclosed that the organisers provided accommodation for him for 5 days.
“This is the 6th year that I have won the Masters category and my time this year was identical to my time last year right down to the last second,” said Gardner who finished the race in a time of 3 hours, 20 minutes, 37 seconds.
The fit looking Gardner, at one time the top distance runner in the North West district, explained that he has ran with success in 10K races in Trinidad, competing in half Marathons in Barbados and only last month won the over-50 stage of the South America 10K race.
The athlete said that he hopes to get enough sponsorship to compete in next month’s Go Barbados Run.
He is also desirous of obtaining a United States of America Visa to run in the Boston and New York Marathons next year.
