Sonics, Scorpions enter second round
Pepsi Sonics and Beepat’s Scorpions joined illustrious company Tuesday night when they won their respective First Division opening round games to complete the five teams that will compete for a place in Sunday night’s final.
Sonics defeated Macabees 59-48 and Scorpions won 87-75 in the featured game when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Knockout competition continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Both teams joined Courts Pacesetters, Dyna’s Ravens and Colours Panthers in the second round of the competition. Kaieteur Sport understands that Ravens got the bye to the semi-final on Saturday following their blow-out first round win.
Hollisworth Casey scored 12 points and Earl O’Neil added eight for Sonics in the win that placed them against Colours Panthers in the featured First Division game tonight, which will follow Nets/Ravens in a Division III semi-final.
Devon Cameron had 11 points for Macabees after his team froze offensively in the third quarter. Macabees scored only one point in the entire period from their halftime score of 13 points, which told the story of their final woes.
Scorpions’ former national junior forwards, Travis Foster and Alwyn Bellamy had 19 and 18 points respectively in the come-from-behind win for the team. Guard Trevor McCleod finished with a supportive 13 points in the win. Colts led Scorpions in the preceding quarters with 24-17 in the first; 40-38 in the second and 58-54 in the third before Scorpions’ sting took effect in the final ten minutes. Vivian Alder and Triston Lake had 10 and 11 points respectively.
Scorpions also had its Division III team qualify for the next round when they won against Colts 88-79. Lance Gouveia scored 14 and Shelroy Thomas had 11 points for Scorpions while Quacy Newton and Dexter Walcott 27 each for Colts.
The second and critically important round of the GABA event will begins tonight where a rivalry as intense as possible is expected. The first set of finalist and semi-finalist will be the outcome of the inaugural contest in the 2009/10 Season.
