Attorneys-at-law Joseph Harmon and Trenton C. Lake filed a civil suit in the High Court on Monday against the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), NAMILCO and Fruta Conquerors.
This follows a lawyer’s letter that was sent by Mr. Harmon a few weeks ago giving the above mentioned entities just under two weeks to come to some financial settlement with Cordis, failing which the civil suit would be filed. This stemmed from a war of words which escalated into a violent confrontation during the Pele/ Riddim Squad first round match in the NAMILCO-sponsored Football Festival, organised by the Fruta Conquerors FC, where three fans, including Cordis, received serious injuries. Cordis sustained injuries to various parts of his body during an attack by someone the attorney had described as ‘a person known to the football authorities.’ He was admitted to the Balwant Singh Hospital where he underwent surgery to repair the damage caused by those injuries.
The suit names General Secretary of the Guyana Football Federation, Noel Adonis, and Secretaries of the Conquerors Football Club, Lavern Fraser, and the National Milling Company, respectively as the defendants.
Cordis is seeking in excess of $1M from each defendant as compensation for the injuries he suffered. The court document cites the loss or damages he suffered as a result of the “Negligence of the defendants in the provision of security at the Tucville playfield, Georgetown on the 23rd October 2009 whereby the plaintiff who was attending a football match ….was attacked and seriously injured.”The GFF has been deemed culpable being the administrators of the sport and should enforce rules to ensure adequate security arrangements at events, while Conquerors were the organising club and NAMILCO the sponsors, the writ states.
The GFF had threatened to ban Cordis and the club he had represented, Riddim Squad, from the sport if any legal challenge was brought against the sporting body. FIFA rules forbid affiliates from resorting to the law courts to settle disputes.
However, Cordis had severed all ties with the club, resigning as its president prior to instituting this course of action. He had indicated that the club has no part in this matter and should not be involved in anyway.
