Andre Coley and fellow Jamaican Andre Creary have been appointed coach and Captain respectively of the West Indies team for the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand January 15-30
The 35-year-old Coley was Head Coach of the regional Under-19 team, which participated with little success in the recently-concluded Regional One-Day competition in Guyana.
Two Guyanese – opener Trevon Griffith and pacer Keon Joseph – were in the 20-man team which played in Guyana and Chairman of the West Indies selectors Clyde Butts told Kaieteur Sports that the 15-man squad to travel to New Zealand has to be named by December 15.
Former Guyana First class left-hander Hubern Evans, who coached Guyana’s team during the last Regional under-19 series in Jamaica in July and August, was Coley’s assistant in the tournament in Guyana. Coley played 7 First-Class and 10 Regional One-Day games for Jamaica as a Keeper.
Coley said the squad is one with lots of talent and has planned practice matches with qualifiers USA and Canada.
The 19-year-old Creary, who missed the entire 2009 Regional competition in Jamaica due to injury after being taken to St Lucia as a member of the makeshift West Indies squad when the senior players took industrial action against the WICB, is the team’s leading batsman.
The elegant right-hander with a solitary First-Class game to his name has been playing at the Regional youth level since 2005 when he made his Jamaica under-15 debut and has been playing Regional under-19 cricket since 2006. He was a member of the last West Indies under-19 team.
Coley’s coached home team Jamaica to both the West Indies three-day and 50-overs under-19 titles this year and he feels his success is mainly due to his willingness to use technology to assess the strengths and weaknesses of his players and opponents.
He has also taken the WICB Level II coaching course, an international module widely used in all Test-playing nations.
Butts, a former West Indies Test off-spinner, was the manager for the regional side with ex-West Indies Test left-hander Larry Gomes the Coach when West Indies participated in the last under-19 World Cup in Malaysia last year.
