Dear Minister and Chairman,
I think that I speak for all of us, the students, at Queen’s College when I say that the current lapse in judgment and gross disrespect on your parts have served as the catalyst for the ongoing impasse at Queen’s College.
The refusal, to rescind the controversial reappointment of a former Deputy Principal, is an act in contravention of the statutes governing the education system and if swept under the carpet, sets a dangerous precedent for the rest of the education sector.
Both of you honorable men happen to be alumni of the prestigious institution and are often the banner-bearers of the “culture and tradition” of the college; and both of you are well-educated individuals, typical products of marvel Queen’s College has churned out into society since its inception.
It brings your intellect into question, however, and exposes a propensity to practice double standards when decisions like these are made and the manner in which they were made.
The teachers were not consulted prior to the “re-appointment” and they were dared to challenge the decision.
As my elders would often say, ingratitude is worse than witchcraft. For these educators, who are directly responsible for molding the minds of (you) great men, to be treated with such contempt, is heart wrenching.
Meanwhile, as you in authority flex your political muscle and seek the upper hand in this impasse, spare a thought for those little people you were ultimately appointed to serve: the students, the tomorrow, the future.
Being students in a bygone era where teachers were venerated and mores rigidly upheld, I am sure you never had cause to spend idle hours in the classrooms, while the Minister of Education and Chairman at the time wrestled with educators for political supremacy! Even as you rebuff calls to lick the wounds to your egos, admit that a gross error has been made and seek to correct it, we students must endure not being able to enjoy contact periods and receive academic instruction. Does this fit into your agenda for the development of the nation’s youth, Mr. Minister?
The examination students are being denied assistance with their School Based Assessments, we are denied being administered routine assessments to keep us prepped for our examinations, we are being denied the opportunity to complete the curricula, etc.
Does this all fit into your grand design for the continued success of our auspicious institution, Mr. Chairman? Is this how you expect us to maintain the legacy of Forbes Burnham, Cheddi Jagan, and more recently, Daniel Ram, Yana Edwards and Kia Persaud?
The brouhaha, that you so selfishly pursue, is having collateral damage, Old Boys. The students are suffering while you seek victory in this meaningless ignorance-fueled campaign against the teachers.
At the end of the month, both the feuding parties will receive a paycheck while we, the students whose parents would have doled out hard-earned money to send us to school, will wind up empty-handed, or should I say empty-brained.
This feud must end!
