The Region Two administration is preparing to minimise economic losses that result from seasonal flooding.
It has embarked on a massive desiliting campaign in five housing schemes, which are considered the most vulnerable areas. These are the Henrietta housing scheme, Richmond, La Belle Alliance, Anna Regina and Cotton Field.
In the past the rainy season was characterized by flooding and the loss of kitchen garden, livestock.
In a recent interview with this newspaper, Regional Chairman Ally Baskh, is imploring on residents to properly dispose of their garbage, instead of dumping it at the street corner at the new site that has now been located at Lima.
Mr. Baskh noted that when the garbage is not properly disposed of it often times gets into the trenches that more than often clogs up the koker, thus resulting into flooding.
The chairman’s strong utterance came shortly after the recent flood that occurred on the coast and also in light of the anticipated rainy season.
Over a month ago residents in Anna Regina, Henrietta and La Belle Alliance were terribly affected by a one night of persistent heavy rainy fall.
One resident, Joe Ramroop, said that both his kitchen garden and yard was submerged under water for over eight hours.
The 77-year-old pensioner said the water had caused grave discomfort for his entire family and opined on three other occasion due to the rainy weather he was affected.
According to Mr. Ramroop, he is strongly convinced that the flooding occur mainly because of the narrow mouth that has been attached to the small trenches in all of the housing schemes.
In the recent flood, Mr. Ramroop lost crops and an electric iron valued $3.000.
