In what was confirmed as a case of drunk driving, 24-year-old Satesh Parmanand, a foreman attached to the GuySuCo Rose Hall Estate, lost his life Monday night, when the car in which he was travelling ended up in a trench at Gangaram Village, East Canje, Berbice.
At the time of the mishap, the car was being driven by Parmanand’s friend, Doodnauth Bedessie, who managed to escape with minor injuries.
Police said that both men were believed to be under the influence of alcohol, since a breath analysis conducted on the driver revealed that he was 195 micrograms over the legal alcohol limit. Reports reaching this newspaper stated that around 22:30 hours the car HB 3753 was heading out of Second Street, Gangaram Village, East Canje when tragedy struck.
As the car reached the major road, the driver lost control and failed to take the turn, instead going straight on and ending up in a trench at the side of the road.
Police in a press release stated that while the vehicle was travelling along the roadway, Satesh Parmanand pulled up the hand brake of the vehicle causing the driver to lose control of the car. The driver freed himself and went for assistance but by the time assistance arrived and managed to free Parmanand, he was unconscious. He was pronounced dead at the New Amsterdam hospital.
Parmanand is the eldest of three children of Kennard Parmanand and Nagama Parmanand and his survived by a brother and sister.
His father described him as a good and willing son.
The driver of the car is in police custody assisting with investigations.
