The body of 21102 Private Julian Marks, of Jaguar Company, 1 Infantry Battalion of the Guyana Defence Force was found yesterday at 10:17 hours by the GDF search team which included a member of the Guyana Police Force.
A release from the GDF stated that Marks’s body was discovered in the Cuyuni River approximately one mile before Ekereku River Mouth and eleven miles from the Eteringbang location.
Marks and another soldier, Private 21008 Clyde Bailey were discovered missing during a roll call last week Tuesday.
Immediately after the discovery of their absence, a search was launched by ranks stationed at that location to find them.
Checks were made at the Eteringbang Police Station, the Military Observation Post and the surrounding area.
At approximately 09:00 hours the following day Private Bailey was found unharmed, by one of the search parties about two miles from the Eteringbang location.
A few hours later a special team, comprising two officers and seven other ranks from First Infantry Battalion and the Special Forces Squadron were flown to the Eteringbang Location to investigate and complement the search effort for Private Marks.
The dead Private’s body was brought out from Eteringbang at 17:10 hours and transported to the Lyken Newburg Funeral Home yesterday.
A post mortem examination is expected to be performed on the body today.
According to the GDF, family members were notified of the recent developments, and arrangements are underway for the deceased soldier to be buried with full military honours.
The matter has been referred to the Guyana Police Force for further investigations.
December eight will mark one year since Corporals Hopkinson and Harris also perished in the Cuyuni River.
