L’Aventure Secondary of Region #3 captured their first major title in Windball Cricket after scoring an upset win over nine times champions Covent Garden in the final of the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport (MCYS) / National Sports Commission (NSC) Inter-Schools Tournament which was played last Friday, at the National Gymnasium.
The West Demerara team defeated Covent Garden by six wickets.
Covent Garden who once again failed to reach that 10 title mark was invited to bat first and scored 103-6 off the allotted six overs with Shameer Fazal 53, Sheldon Agard 17 and Kenrick Paris 11, being the principal contributors.
Safraz Esau took 2-13 bowling for L’Aventure.
When they batted, they reached the required target, closing on 106-2 off 5.5 overs with Player of the Final Travis Cato making 50 not out, while Esau 26 and Rajindra Sugrim 18 supported admirably.
S. Fazal was judge MVP of this year’s Champions Trophy scoring 244 runs in 4 matches.
In the playoff for third place, GITC beat Lodge High by seven wickets wickets.
Lodge made 81-7 with Devon Lord 22, Akeem Simon 11.
Selwin Peters grabbed 2-8, Paul Bobb 2-20.
GITC in reply, ended on 84-1 with Stefan Macedo 39, Christopher Manorath 24 and Richard Williams 10.
In semi-final play:
L’Aventure defeated GITC by eight wickets.
GITC 64-3, C. Manorath 30. Chandradat Coonauth 2-10.
L’Aventure 66-0, T Cato 26, S Esau 24.
Covent Garden then romped to an easy 43 runs triumph over Lodge.
Covent Garden compiled 109-2 with S. Fazal 47, Jagdesh Bishun 38 and Mark Rhobe 10.
Lodge replied with 66-7, Daniel Wilson 29, Stephon Sampson 16.M Rhode 3-7, Harry Rampersaud 3-9.
Sports Officer Allister Munroe, who organised the tournament expressed thanks to the sponsors MCYS NSC for allowing the use of the Gymnasium and also providing the prizes for this event, while the Ministry of Education received special mention for giving its approval to the 16 schools that participated in the competition.
