Several teams won their matches and were adjudged champions in their respective categories when the curtains came down on the countrywide cricket championships organized by the Softball Cricket League and sponsored by Mike’s Pharmacy.
In the feature event Rangers SC played the game of their lives to dethrone Die Hard and capture the prestigious countrywide championship trophy.
Die Hard XI took first strike after winning the toss and eventually compiled 127-9 in their allotted 15 overs. Richard Patterson lashed 26 to take the batting honours overshadowing star batsman, Patrick Rooplall, who departed shortly after hitting a huge six. He attempted the shot once again off Dhanraj Champalall but failed clear the fielder on the boundary line. Asif Saffie was the best bowler for Rangers SC. He took 4-20 from 3 overs. Supporting him was Dhanraj Champalall who bowled with venom to take 2-21 from 3 overs.
Rangers SC then cruised to 128-1 in 10.3 overs with man of the match Ameer Nizamuddeen clobbering an unbeaten 62 which included five sixes and two fours. Safraz Karim also contributed with an unbeaten knock of 45 (1×6 and 4×4).
In another exciting match, Trophy Stall Masters overwhelmed Shattaville by 34 runs to become the Countrywide Masters Champions.
Shattaville won the toss and invited Trophy Stall to take first strike. Dennis Mangroo hit a belligerent 41(3×6; 3×4) with support from Colin Greaves who lashed an enterprising 36(1×6; 6×4) and Rudy Rodrigues whose 30 consisted of 4 sixes. He was later adjudged Man of the Match. Those three were the principal scorers and helped their team to post a decent total of 209-8 in their 25 overs. Lionel Persaud (2-11 from 5 overs) was the most successful bowler for Trophy Stall while Narine Ragunandan supported with figures of 2-36 also from 5 overs.
When they took to the crease, Shattaville could only muster 175 in their 25. Gerald McKoy lashed 25 to take the batting honours while Rudy Rodrigues (3- 29 from 4 overs) captured the bowling honours for the winning team. He was eventually adjudged Man of the Match.
The event was well supported and the first match between Zeeburg Youths and Uitvlugt Youths for the KidiCare trophy set the tone for what turned out to be an exciting day of cricket. In this match both displayed skills befitting champions and fortunes fluctuated as both teams enjoyed favourable moments. Zeeburg Youths won the toss and after electing to bat was placed on the back foot after Adrian Ramsammy snared David Richards and Arvin Seepersaud in succession with only 4 runs on the board.
Kwason Joseph, eventually voted Man of the Match, then steadied the innings clobbering the bowlers to all parts of the field to register an unbeaten 60. His total consisted of 6 sixes and 3 fours. Zeeburg Youths eventually ended on 115-6. The best bowler for Uitvlugt Youths was Adrian Ramsammy (2-16 from 2 overs).
Uitvlugt began their innings in a hurry with Arshad Azim lashing 15 runs off the first over. He only managed to add three more runs to his score before he was brilliantly run out by a direct hit from the long on fielder David Baird. Thereon the innings declined and Uitvlugt only managed 75 all out in 9.5 overs handing Zeeburg Youths the Country wide U-15 title.
Cricket fans were also entertained when # 68 All Stars defeated Heavenly Angels to cart off the Well woman Trophy. Heavenly Angels won the toss and took first strike. Urma Gidding top scored with 60 (4x6and 3×4) to lead her team to 144 -7 in 15 overs. Bowling for # 68 All Stars Tenaza Leonard took 3-23 from 2 overs.
Number 68 All Stars started their innings on a disastrous note losing several wickets. Melanie Henry clobbered an unbeaten 57 (4×6; 5×4) off 34 balls and was eventually voted best batter. Shermaine Balgobin (3-24 from 3 overs) took the bowling honours in a losing cause.
Meanwhile, Director of Youth and Sports Mr. Neil Kumar congratulated the various winners while reiterating the need to bridge the gap between the communities through participation. He explained that these tournaments created opportunities for strong friendships even as he charged the winners to be role models of society.
Sponsor of the championships, Mike Singh echoed Kumar’s sentiments while noting that softball cricket is the catalyst towards healthier lives. Trophies and cash incentives were awarded to various winners.
Persons supporting the final day’s activities received several products offered by the sponsors including Kidicare, Wellman, and Well woman. Fans also received other prizes compliments of the sponsors such as clocks, pencils, exercise books, t- shirts, fans, binoculars, rulers, pen holders, among other items.
KidiCare tonics, energy drinks made by Wellman and Well woman also formed a part of the gift package.
