Displace top-three ranked Nets in OT

Colours Panthers justified their recent lucrative sponsorship deal Sunday night at the Cliff Anderson Sport Hall when they displaced number three ranked, Nets with a superb win in Overtime (OT) in the featured First Division game.
Panthers came from 13 points down at halftime to first tie-up the game at 61 apiece at the end of regulation time, before rallying to a 77-72 points win in OT. Nets had held a 33-20 points’ lead at the halftime break in the game.
The two teams were battling for a place in the second round of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Division 1 Knockout Tournament. Nets became the first major causality of the Season-opening competition.
Point guard, Jacob Lowe led Colours Panthers with 18 points while Yannick Wade and Ian Klien added 11 points each for the win. Mortimer Williams scored 26 points for Nets with Fabian Johnson supporting with 19 points.
Before the featured match-up, Pepsi Sonics and Ravens recorded comfortable Division III wins against Guyana Defence Force and Eagles respectively. Sonics won 64-45 while the Ravens pecked away with a 65-37 points’ triumph.
Darrion Lewis had 21 points for Sonics while Courtney Hinds finished with 17 points and Kieth Tute eight. Oral Younge had 16 points for Defence Force with D Cupids adding 12 and Royston Jones 11 points in support.
Keino George top scored with 16 points for Ravens while Tiago Thom finished with nine for Eagles. Ravens are to play Nets in one of the Third Division semi-finals scheduled for the same venue Thursday night.
Colours Panthers, formerly known as Demerara Panthers, attracted funding from Colours Boutique last week where a quantity of gear was handed over to the club. Coach, Deryck Alphonso Jr. promised upward mobility in the City.
“We will try our best to live up to standards, we will try to bring in some trophies to give him (owner of Colours Boutique, Milton Brandford) the mileage,” Alphonso said, adding that that is the only way to motivate the company.
Panthers are currently ranked eighth in the First Division rankings in Georgetown, which is two steps from the bottom. Nets had booted their second-seeded Third Division team from the competition on the opening night last Friday.
The win for them in the senior First Division game was revenge and will definitely boost their confidence in the second round. Nets joined number one ranked, Courts Pacesetters and number two seeded, Dyna’s Ravens in Round Two.
“We will be a force to reckon with. We actually expect to come out every time and show that we are a force to reckon with,” Alphonso boasted. The come-from-behind win placed them on the waiting list as the first round end tonight.
Pepsi Sonics takes on Macabbees and Bounty Colts battles Beepat’s Scorpions in the two First Division games tonight. Colts will play Scorpions in the Third Division encounter to bring an end to the initial round of the Knockout event.
