The Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown would be celebrating it’s 25th anniversary of it’s chapter today. The club, which is affiliated to the International Inner Wheel, has its genesis as far back as 1924 in Manchester, England, when Margarette Golding together with a group of wives of Rotarians officially chartered the club.
The International Wheel was born in 1967.
The Inner Wheel Club of Central Georgetown was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Georgetown Central. At the time of the sponsorship the club was newly founded under the leadership of Rotarian Azeez Hussain (deceased).
Under the guidance, Azeez and his desire to introduce Inner Wheel to Guyana, the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown Central was formed in January 1984 and chartered on November 24 that year.
At the time the charter President was Yvonne Holder (deceased) and Vice President O’Donna Allsopp.
The six chapter members who are still active members are O’Donna Allsopp, Joan Fields, Rosamond Choo-Shee-Nam, Eileen Chin, Annette Gooding and Margaret Yong.
In 1985 the club embarked on its first project of service to the community. That project was the setting up of a community library for the under privileged children at the David Rose Centre West Ruimveldt.
Craft sessions were also conducted. Invaluable assistance at this time was provided by Patricia Gomes and Nathalie De Cambra.
The books were donated by the Lady Ranfurly Library in England and subsequently by CODE in Canada. The excess books were donated to other libraries and organisations.
Many other projects were undertaken including minor repairs to buildings and the supply of lunches. The beneficiaries include home for senior citizens, the Salvation Army Women’s Home and also the Home for the Street Children at Mahaica. The group also donated a ramp at the National Library to facilitate the handicapped. Educational grants and monetary donations to persons seeking medical attention overseas are also available. The club would continue to give donations through it’s fund raising activities to provide assistance to organisations and individuals, both in Georgetown and rural areas. The focus for 2010 would be helping single mothers who are victims of domestic violence.
