…repossession of land will be resisted-PNCR
The government’s recent penchant for seizing land appears to have shifted to Berbice, according to People’s National Congress Reform Member of Parliament, Africo Selman.
Selman, speaking to the media at the party’s most recent press briefing, drew reference to the fact that the MMA-ADA (Mahaica Mahaicony Abary Agricultural Development Authority) has issued hundreds of notices to farmers and residents of West Coast Berbice threatening to seize lands that have been under their control for generations.
The reason for the seizure is for the non-payment of all fees owed to the MMA-ADA.
Selman said that the move is another attempt to dispossess many farmers since the government is aware that the failure of the very MMA-ADA to maintain drainage and irrigation facilities in the scheme has affected farmers’ productivity.
Selman added that one year ago, the MMA-ADA made a similar attempt to dispossess farmers. “The outcry of farmers all across the region, including supporters of the PPPC, forced the Minister to hold a series of meetings with farmers.”
She stated that at those meetings, several promises were made by Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud to address their concerns and more than a year later very little has been done while the MMA-ADA attempts to repeat the same exercise.
She said that the Minister and the Ministry of Agriculture should concentrate on addressing the problems of the farmers rather than dispossessing them with the aim of giving these lands to PPP supporters.
“Robert Persaud and the MMA-ADA should, therefore, be put on notice that their renewed efforts to seize the lands from rice farmers, who have occupied them for generations in West Coast Berbice, and to hand those lands over to political activists will be resisted by the PNCR and the people of that Region.”
On Sunday last, the Mahaica/Mahaicony/Abary Agricultural Development Authority issued what it called it’s final warning to farmers as it relates to outstanding drainage and irrigation accounts.
An advertisement placed in this newspaper on Sunday last, stated that persons in arrears have a total of seven days left to settle their accounts.
