Dear Editor,
I was delighted to receive an invitation to the President’s Suite (PS) to view the final of the 2009 Regional 50-Over Competition between Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago at the National Stadium. A relative who is associated with the Guyana Cricket Board provided me with the invitation.
During the course of the second innings (Guyana batting), I left my seat to go to the washroom and to make a purchase at the bar. I left my cell phone in a vacant seat next to mine.
On returning, I could not find my cell phone despite a frantic and thorough search and enquiries from persons around.
After a while I resigned myself to having lost my cell phone, not an expensive one, but there were some important telephone numbers stored in the memory.
I decided to take a closer look around the PS as I was sure that I was in a privileged area which required a proper code of dress and conduct.
I was disappointed by what I saw. Persons in the PS were attired in immodest short pants, vests and an array of hats. Some had their feet perched high up on the seats immediately in front of them.
A young couple was seen in a tight embrace and some of the occupants had large coolers with an assortment of beers.
A nut vendor was discreetly plying her trade from a bucket, while some prankster, who appeared to have access to the main switch was turning the lights of the PS on and off.
At the completion of the match, many of the persons who had swarmed the ground for the presentation, which was held in front of the PS, used the PS as an exit from the building.
I learnt from someone sitting in front of me that she and her friends had paid for tickets to the PS. I was surprise to hear this, as I thought that entry to the PS was strictly by invitation.
I later learnt that the sale of tickets had been advertised on both radio and in the newspaper.
I raised this matter with my relative who informed me that the Guyana Cricket Board did not authorise the sale of tickets for the PS, as the Board is well aware of the conditions for use of the PS.
If this is so then I have to ask why were tickets sold for the PS, on whose authority and where did the money go. Maybe the Ministry of Sports should issue a statement on the matter.
However, most importantly, I am of the view that what I witnessed that day threatens President Jagdeo’s safety.
