Reece, Blackman & Bentley capture junior, veteran & upright categories
Tony Simon ended the 2009 cycling season with victory in the 10th Diamond Mineral Water 50-mile road race held on the West Demerara yesterday when he outhustled Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams to win in one hour 58 minutes 14 seconds.
Williams was followed to the line by Marlon Morrison, Junior Niles, Robin Persaud and Albert Philander in that order.
Berbician Neil Reece won the junior category ahead of Paul De Nobrega. Jude Bentley took the upright division with Richard Charles and Kester Croal 2nd and 3rd respectively. Linden Blackman was the top veteran followed by Virgil Jones and Turhan Harris.
The senior race which attracted 13 starters saw the trio of Robin Persaud, Tony Simon and Marlon Williams bolting ahead of the others from the start but with the chasing pack connecting at Ruby on the upward journey.
Marlon Morrison then decided to attack and was followed by Simon and Williams. They led all the way on the downward journey before Simon went into overdrive at New Road Vreed-en-Hoop followed by Williams with Simon prevailing to notch up another victory. Simon, Williams, Morrison and Persaud claimed two prime prizes each.
