There have been attempts at Turkish belly dancing at some dance shows in Guyana, namely those produced by the Apsara group; but never before the allure and seduction of what transpired at the Princess Hotel, formerly Buddy’s, at Providence on Saturday evening.
Ever since the Turkish investors bought over the hotel, there have been plans to improve on the entertainment it offers and to open up the facility to more local and international guests.
Saturday night was a glorious start as the hotel prepares to open up a disco, bowling alley and a cinema, along with a casino.
Belly dancing is an old art form enjoyed by Turks of all classes and ages, and it was quite apparent that the Guyanese crowd was left spellbound when three curvaceous women emerged.
They were well trained, at least their abdominal muscles were! To complement their stunning beauty and the mastery of the belly dance, they accompanied their moves with small finger cymbals.
It is typical during Turkish dances for appreciate observers to stuff money into the few scant recesses of the costume of the dancers, but not too many of the men were anxious to do that. Maybe they didn’t walk with cash, but their credit cards instead. Even if the women danced close enough, it didn’t help.
General Manager Muharrem Kuleci said the hotel is well along in it’s development plan and it’s entertainment centre will provide employment for some 250 persons.
Among those attending the event were President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Minister of Tourism Manniram Prashad, Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh, Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Jennifer Webster, Head of the Guyana Office for Investment, Geoffrey Da Silva, and prominent businessmen.
