Dear Editor,
I write to applaud Freddie Kissoon for writing a very good column (Act I, Scene II, Enter Norway, Kaieteur News, November 20) in which he did not malign anyone’s character or attack anyone – first in a long time.
It was an intelligent commentary (not that I agree with all his points but he made a constructive critique with some very valid points) in which he (Freddie) identified a problem and proposed a solution to tackle it. More of this kind of columns will be greatly appreciated by readers (and I hope Government) instead of a daily rant against Government or President Jagdeo or an official or an attack on decent people.
I agree with Freddie that Guyana is not likely to get pledges of major aid next month at the Copenhagen Climate Summit for LCDS, and the expected US$500 million annually (which Guyana deserves) will not be in the pipe (not any time soon anyway).
As Freddie rightly advised, Guyana should seek other forms of (developmental) aid from Norway (other countries as well) besides climate funds. His proposed subsidy on fuel import (for GPL) is a good one but the burning of diesel undermines Norway’s goal of getting countries to switch to green energy and may not be inclined to help out.
Guyana may achieve better success in requesting assistance to set up wind and solar devices to generate electricity which will reduce the cost of oil imports while leading to a cleaner environment.
