Dear Editor,
Why would any sane person want to name a dumpsite, The Mandela Dumpsite? Worse still, why place a dumpsite in such an urban area as South Georgetown. Both actions are downright disrespectful.
There are certain people in this world who are unambiguously referred to by their last name. In fact, it is quite common for last names to be used to identify many people of historic and popular culture status. Nelson Mandela is one of these people.
Former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela is a revolutionary leader who has dedicated his life to the struggle to free his people from the evil apartheid system under which black South Africans were denied human dignity and rights and suffered the state sponsored destruction of black family life.
Mandela, a man who was reviled, imprisoned for 27 years and eventually recognised as a head of state, and who showed more magnanimity than his predecessors, giving hope to both his own people and to others that they can bridge their own racial divisions.
Say the name Mandela and everyone young and old knows who you are referring to. Type in ‘Mandela’ on the internet and you will not find it synonymous with a dumpsite.
What is wrong with the people of Guyana that they readily accept a dumpsite situated in an urban area and also the denigration of this great man’s name in this way? I implore the Mayor of Georgetown, all opposition parties, Guyana Human Rights organisation and every responsible person in Guyana to petition the Government not only for a name change immediately, but petition also for its immediate removal from such a densely populated area.
Placing a dumpsite in such an urban area is simply providing a breeding ground for disease vectors, and poses significant dangers to human health and environment. After all, the PPP would not countenance the naming of the local sewerage plant the Cheddi Jagan Sewerage Plant. The Government of Guyana should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. They must move the dumpsite and re-name it immediately.
