In the quest to give recognition to the vision and foresight of the 83 freed slaves who, 170 years ago, purchased the village of Victoria, East Coast Demerara, an honorary event will be held next week Thursday and Friday.
November 7 last, marked 170 years since the purchase by the 83 men and women who had the will to pool their resources and invest in the co-operative venture.
According to a press statement, the move was an audacious and historic decision that made Victoria Village permanently famous and a shining beacon to other villages on the East Coast of Demerara and Guyana at large.
Victorians, the statement added, also pay tribute and acknowledge the return on the investment by the original 83 slaves who bought Victoria, and proudly boast of the leading educators, doctors, lawyers, engineers, playwrights, electrical and civil engineers, accountants, management consultants, land surveyors, nurses and public servants – authentic Victorians—who have risen to the top of their chosen fields and professions.
On Thursday in Victoria and on Friday at the National Library in the city, Victorians everywhere in Guyana are invited to commemorate the important event in their history by attending and honouring the ancestors and founding fathers and mothers.
These first Victorians, the statement noted, are responsible for the rich legacy and treasure called Victoria, thus the need to celebrate the great accomplishments and achievements of fellow Victorians.
In New York on November 29, some outstanding Victorians will also be honoured with the 2009 “Outstanding Victorians” Award.
Among the honorees are Educator and Attorney, Professor Harold Lutchman, who through his maternal grandmother has deep roots among the original purchasers and founders of Victoria; Doreen Butcher an Educator, Community Activist; Agriculturist, L.R.D. Ainsworth, an Educator and Village Chairman; Stanley Roberts, Village Chairman and Mentor who worked as a manager at Plantation Enmore Sugar Estate for several years until he retired; and International Artist, Master Sculptor, Ivor Ian Thom, born in Victoria.
