…says instigators no friend of the party
General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Donald Ramotar, yesterday lashed out at what he called a mischievous campaign currently seeking to garner support for a third term for President Bharrat Jagdeo.
Ramotar, in a statement issued to the media is publicly denouncing the campaign.
The PPP, in a press statement, said that the party has noted that some mischievous elements have launched a proactive campaign against the party.
It added that in recent days they have noticed television advertisements have appeared calling for a third term for President Jagdeo, it was also noted that a billboard has been erected with the same message.
This billboard was recently erected on a private property at the corner of Robb St. and Avenue of the Republic.
Several weeks ago, a group calling itself the Guyanese Coalition for Jagdeo Third Term (GCFJTT) began distributing flyers voicing its support for a third term for President Jagdeo.
On that initial flyer is said inter alia, “We the people of Guyana admire President Bharrat Jagdeo for his visionary, courageous and astute leadership over the years.”
That flyer was also accompanied by a red and white button advocating for the third term.
The campaign escalated over the weeks as several posters were plastered on walls across the city with the President’s image along with a call for support for a third term.
There is now a television advertisement being aired that is calling for support for the third term.
Ramotar, in his statement, reiterated that the campaign is being waged at a time when the President has repeatedly stated that he was not interested in a term third.
Despite the statements of the party and President Jagdeo’s pronouncements, the campaign is still continuing, Ramotar noted.
Ramotar posited that whoever is involved with the campaign clearly has an agenda.
According to Ramotar, the party can only assume that it is being done to cause confusion and distrust in Guyana and particularly among PPP supporters.
Whilst denouncing the campaign, Ramotar called on members, supporters and other well wishers of the party to be ever vigilant and “frustrate the plans of those that are trying to divide our people.”
He told this newspaper that the persons behind that campaign, “are no friends of the party.”
