Lusignan dethroned under lights in historic final
Defending Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Hand-in-Hand 2nd division 50-overs champions Lusignan of East Coast were crushed by 86 runs on home turf by city side DCC on Friday in the first ever 2nd division cricket final in Guyana to be played under lights.
A large crowd watched as West Indies under-19 left-hander and Man-of-the-Match Trevon Griffith blazed to a shot-filled 94 with 7 fours and 4 sixes while Devon Gonsalves (75) and Lawrence Farnum (61) also scored half-centuries as DCC, opting to bat under sunlight, reached 304.
Lusignan then fell for 218 in 40.5 overs as national under-19 left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun grabbed 5-25 although Chaitram Gangadin (53) and Azim Haniff (50) registered fifties in a losing effort.
The left-handed pair of Griffith and Farnum put together 85 for the 2nd wicket on a slow track after Demerara under-19 Skipper Rajendra Naikbarran had removed Jaron Byron early in the contest.
After the demise of Griffith and Farnum who reached the boundary 6 times and cleared it twice, Gonsalves, who hit 4 fours and 2 sixes was run out, Denis Squires (22) and Kevin George (21) made useful contributions to see their team past the 300 mark in the final of a competition which was described by DCB President Bissoon Singh as the biggest cricket competition in Demerara with 90 teams participating.
After National under-15 left-hander Brian Sattaur stroked 5 fours in 40, Gangadin and Haniff added 85 in an entertaining 6th wicket stand to keep the home team in the contest but once they were dismissed Bishoo cleaned up the innings to help bowl DCC to the $60,000 first prize.
Lusignan had to settle for the $40,000 2nd prize while both teams collected trophies and medals.
Singh congratulated the teams for reaching the final and DCC for winning the first club final under lights in Guyana away from the Guyana National Stadium and thanked the Hand-in-Hand Group of Companies, who pumped $1.3 million into the oldest cricket competition in Guyana, for their continued support.
