The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) held an appreciation ceremony at Olympic House last Friday evening in recognition of the latest achievements of the national Men’s and Women’s teams who successfully retained their North American & Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) title in Mexico recently.
President of the Union Noel Adonis speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that the players thoroughly deserved to be rewarded for their outstanding accomplishments once again this year where they respectively successfully defended their regional titles with the Men going on to make it four in a row, while the Women follows closely with back-to-back wins.
The Men for their victory have now qualified to compete at the IRB World Sevens Series in Las Vegas next year and are also automatic qualifiers for the Commonwealth Games in India, while Guyana will host the CASCO Tournament, all scheduled for next year.
The impressive Guyanese men have now gone four years without a loss to a Caribbean side during which time they’ve racked up a staggering 26-0 record and could now boast of being the undisputed pound for pound best in the region at Sevens rugby.
Stand-in Captain Theodore Henry in brief comments warned that Guyana will get even better come next year, adding that the team is currently playing at a high level right now and even the guys that returned to the fold after being out of the national team were anxious to display their talent.
He said that they were eagerly looking forward to the World Series where they will clash with some of the best teams in the world and called on the Government and Business Community to come on board and support their preparations.
“Which other national team have had the Golden Arrowhead flying so high, far and consistently like us and I feel that we deserve to be even more recognised and rewarded for our exploits,” Henry felt.
He noted that not many other national teams have been able to go four years unbeaten against the best in the Caribbean, referring to it as a significant achievement which has been overlooked by those in authority.
He urged them to add their support and finance to ensure that they get maximum preparations against quality teams so that when they arrive in Las Vegas, perhaps, they could spring some surprises against the best.
Henry informed that the team will commence training as soon as next week for the February competition.
