The bandit who was shot and killed on Thursday night during a brazen robbery at the East Ruimveldt Market has been identified as Den Amstel resident, Trevor Mc Lean.
Mc Lean and an accomplice had just finished robbing Kirk and Susan Nurse of $10,000 cash. Mc Lean, a one-time escapee from the Mazaruni Prison, was released from prison, a mere two weeks ago after serving an eight-year sentence for manslaughter.
Mc Lean had escaped from prison three years ago and was recaptured a few days later. He was also shot in the shoulder.
According to a police press release, the stall owners, Kirk Nurse and his wife Susan Nurse, had just finished closing their stall when the two bandits struck.
Susan Nurse had told this newspaper that her husband and an employee were putting up the shutters when the bandits struck.
According to Mrs. Nurse, the two men approached the front of the stall and requested cigarettes.
She said that the bandits, after being told that they were out cigarettes, hurried to the back of the stall, one with his gun drawn, telling them to hand over their cash.
The two bandits were stopped in their tracks by two plainclothes security men who were in the vicinity at the time. After the gunfire had stopped, one of the bandits was found lying dead on the road, the other bandit managed to escape.
One of the security personnel, Kayode McDonald, was shot in the left elbow during the exchange and was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital and sent away.
The police release further stated that an unlicensed Taurus 9mm pistol with six matching rounds in a magazine was recovered in Mc Lean’s hand. Twenty-four live 9mm. rounds were also found in his pants pocket.
