Nov 21, 2009 Letters
Dear Mr. Editor,
I have read with concern the letter which appeared in the newspaper asserting that the activities at Roraima Duke Lodge have robbed Duke Street of its tranquility.
Immediately upon reading the letter I instructed the staff to seek out “residents” in the vicinity of the Duke Lodge in order that we might ventilate their concerns with them, since at no time did anyone contact the Management of Roraima Airways to address a matter of disturbance.
The Roraima Duke Lodge, as I believe you are aware, is located in the business district of Upper Kingston, opposite the Embassy of the United States of America in Georgetown.
The other buildings in close or relatively close proximity to the facility are the Office of Empowerment, the Office of the Guyana Power and Light Company, a privately run school, the Canadian High Commission, Pegasus Hotel, Red House, the headquarters of the trade union NAACIE, the headquarters of DIGICEL, the Kingston Methodist Church and the incomplete structure that will eventually house the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry.
None of these are residential premises.
In every respect, the Roraima Duke Lodge is compliant with the requirements of the law. We take no latitude that exceeds the prerogatives of our legally held licences.
At the very onset we ensured that we applied for and were granted all the relevant licences for the operation of Duke Lodge as a Hotel, Restaurant, Bar and hospitality facility.
The assertion in the letter regarding the pile up of cups on the road, in the drains and on bridges, cannot be substantiated. We, as a matter of routine, undertake a scrupulous cleaning exercise immediately following every public function.
The issue of the taxis double parking on the road, honking their horns and playing loud music is also of grave concern to us, as well as the itinerant vendors.
We have consulted with and are seeking advice from the police on such issues as naturally arise at locations that provide public entertainment.
We are, moreover, prepared to engage those “residents” who are disposed to discussion on the issues.
Capt. Gerry Gouveia
