More than 60 Education officials comprising retired teachers and head teachers were on Thursday allowed the opportunity of discussing ideas and conditions relating to their applications for re-employment within the school system.
Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh addressed the concerns of these teachers who responded to the Ministry’s call for the retired teachers to serve the nation, once more dedicating their skills, time and expertise to the further development of the country.
Minister Baksh identified key areas where expertise is required and urged the gathering to return with renewed dedication and vigour to help in the transformation since this will result in quality outcomes in the education sector. The Minister explained that there is urgent need for teachers in the areas of Guidance and Counseling in schools which need to be addressed since many students do not focus properly in classrooms due to various reasons such as personal and home problems.
The persons selected to fill the posts in these areas will be required to spend ample time in teams at each school on a rotation system, which will allow all schools to benefit. Currently there are 30 schools offering technical vocational studies and the Ministry aims to double this figure by 2012.
Minister Baksh urged the participants in the discussion to ensure that they are willingly and wholeheartedly re-entering the teaching system for the love of children and educating them, and not for the money or benefits which they may receive. Special focus needs to be placed on the first year students in the tops of primary schools nationwide, which will allow all late developers to benefit from quality teaching and not be left behind due to their delayed pace.
The retired teachers were chosen from over 100 applicants and will be commencing duties, once successfully selected, in January 2010. Some of these teachers will be sent out into the hinterland areas to provide services, however, teachers are given the opportunity of stating their preferences before the final date of acceptance.
