Police have detained seven more suspects in connection with Wednesday’s multi-million-dollar robbery at the home of an overseas-based Guyanese family at Hampshire, Corentyne.
Kaieteur News understands that a relative of the victims is among those detained.
Police sources said that he is being considered a prime suspect and is likely to be charged.
A police release said that the men were arrested after investigators searched five houses at Rose Hall, Port Mourant, Albion, Belvedere and Hampshire, Corentyne.
A taxi driver and an estate employee were held on Thursday and are reportedly still in custody.
On Wednesday, five gun-toting bandits escaped with millions in cash and jewellery after storming the home of Ramsammy Moonsammy, 53, and his wife, Nadeira Moonsammy, 47.
Police identified the other victims as Laleena Moonsammy, 20, a student of Houston County College, USA, and Rasheeda Moonsammy, 21.
Constable 20387 Sharam Singh, of Lot 72 Mara’s Lodge, Essequibo, was struck in the face with shotgun pellets while he and other ranks were heading to the scene.
According to Laleena Moonsammy, the robbers made off with approximately US$11,000 in cash, gold and diamond jewellery, mobile phones, a camera, an Ipod and other paraphernalia.
The police also reported that the patriarch and one of his daughters were beaten with the weapons.
Laleena Moonsammy had told Kaieteur News that she suspects that a relative who was present provided the robbers with information.
She had said that the relative was laughing while the heist was in progress.
The woman added that her mother had made some gold jewellery for a relative in the United States.
The father, Ramsammy Moonsammy, arrived in Guyana on November 1 to return to his adopted homeland within three weeks. His wife, Nadira, their two children Laleena and Ruchma, along with Ruchma’s husband, Lincoln Maharaj, 22, came on November 13 for a ten-day visit.
Laleena recalled that her family hosted a barbeque and about 20 relatives and friends were present when the gunmen struck.
The bandits discharged several rounds while fleeing and Constable Singh, who was heading to the scene in a police vehicle, was struck in the face.
He is being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
