The festive season is nearing and the General Post Office (GPO) still anticipates mail volume increase for the Christmas holidays although customers have found other means of posting, such as the electronic media.
However, the GPO is advising people to post their international (overseas) mail before December 11. This will secure a better guarantee for timely delivery for the Christmas holiday while local mail should be posted before December 20.
According to the Public Relations Officer, Yolaskee Jervis, a full workforce would be in place for the holidays where staff would work overtime and would be reassigned to ensure effective management to the proper flow and higher volume of work to be done, as well as each office would have its full complement of staff.
This will assist pensioners who will turn out in full force to receive their pension.
Plans are also set in place to meet with Airline officials pertaining to the movement of mail to give assurance of timely convenience of mail.
Ms Jervis further said that because of technological advancements there has been a reduced volume of mail, there are also other services offered such as the bill payments and money orders while for the festive season there is a special service offered for delivery of gifts and packages within the vicinity of Georgetown.
The GPO is also advising persons to inform senders that electronic items which are targeted for tampering such as cell phones, Laptop computers and digital cameras, to be warned that such packages should be sent knowing the consequences that are prevalent.
The GPO has also acknowledged that there has been a dramatic decrease in illicit items in packages, in addition, the post office has also encountered problems with persons that change their addresses without notifying the necessary authorities and mail would be either refused by the occupants of the address or mailed to the return address if any is written on the mail.
