Refuses to degenerate into gutter
By Edison Jefford
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) quelled Pepsi Sonics criticism when they refused to seriously address issues related to their tenure in office, which was a source of controversy for the affiliated local club.
Secretary of the GABA, Robert Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport that he will not get into slug fests with the club because the association has only been one year in office. Cadogan said that the club probably expects the extraordinary.
In a recent Press Release, Sonics had stated that the “GABA is merely a group of people with no mandate or vision due to the fact that these individuals are operating without any constition to govern them and the entity (GABA)”.
In addition, the Georgetown-affiliated club had criticised the GABA approach toward the development of youth basketball when they stated that enough programmes are not being held to enhance their growth. That was their recent hit. However, the GABA has refused to get into any tangle with the club because they simply believe that it is unnecessary. “I don’t want to get into that. We don’t need negative press for basketball,” Codagan told this newspaper yesterday.
“The GABA is going to accept criticism because as we admitted, there was not enough of the sport last year in our first year, but we believe that there are a lot more important issues to be dealt with,” he continued when pressed.
Cadogan told members of the media that the work to take basketball where it belongs is a heavy burden and in his mind, instead of Pepsi Sonics take time to berate the Georgetown Executive, might as well they help with development.
“We have only been in office one year and I do not know if they expect a miracle but the sport cannot afford a slugfest at this time. We have more important issues to deal with, as a result, we will not go into the gutter,” Cadogan said.
The comments came on the heels of the launch of the GABA new first and third Division Season that started at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall last night. The tournament is expected to continue with two more games tonight.
