Claim GCB 4-Day cricket title
By Sean Devers
Half-centuries from in-form Skipper , Wicket Keeper Delbert Hicks and Homchand Pooran spearheaded Berbice to an emphatic 7-wicket win against Demerara with over a session to spare in their final round Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior 4-Day cricket match at the Everest ground yesterday.
The 24-year-old Fudadin, with 5 fifties from 27 First-Class matches, followed up his double century against Essequibo in the previous round with an attractive 86 to lead Berbice to 279-3 for their 3rd consecutive win in the competition.
The left-hander hit 8 fours and 3 sixes before he lofted a short ball from off-spinner Steven Jacobs to deep mid-wicket at 225-3 but by then sloppy work in the field and an under-staffed Demerara bowling attack had put Berbice, already the Champions regardless of yesterday’s result, in the driver’s seat on another steaming hot day.
Scores: Demerara 248 & 334, Berbcie 304 & 279-3.
Earlier, Berbcie began the day on 42 without loss and quickly lost Artley Bailey (18) who was bowled by off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed at 57-1. Mohamed then bowled the left-handed Hicks for an attacking 70 with 8 fours and 2 sixes to leave the visitors on 150-2.
The experienced Homchand Pooran continued to produce at this level with a rock-solid unbeaten 68 and got support from Ranga Latchana (8*) as Berbice won the match with a six from Pooran off leg-spinner Troy Gonsalves to the delight of the handful of spectators which included members of the Rest Team who finished 2nd in the 4-team competition.
Demerara had to settle for the 3rd spot while Essequibo, who lost all of their games, finished in the cellar position.
The winners collected $200,000 and the championship trophy while the Rest team received $150,000 and the runner-up trophy. A Guyana 20-man training squad is expected to be selected on Monday to begin preparations for the 2010 Regional First-Class cricket season which is scheduled to commence in early January.
