“Up to yesterday, we had about 75 registrations, and if those numbers are correct it would be a record number,” Troy Peters told the media yesterday when the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) launched the prestigious Guyana Open tournament.
Peters, the Public Relations Officer of the Club, said that they have since received entries from the United States, Canada and Suriname for the two-day tournament that Tees-off at the Lusignan Golf Course tomorrow morning at 9am.
“We understand that defending champion, Imran Khan, members of the diplomatic corps and Avinash Persaud, just to name a few, are down to participate in this year’s Open and we are elated about that,” Peters continued at Thirst Park.
He said that top local female golfer, Christine Sookram will receive a definite challenge this year from Joan Deo, who has shown that she is in good form this year. The Suriname women were also identified as threats to Sookram.
Banks DIH, using the Power Stout brand, continued the sponsorship of the Guyana Open. Marketing and Sales Executive, Carlton Joao informed that Banks is committed to ensure that the golfers are comfortable over the two days.
“Over the years we have helped in the development of golf. We want to encourage all the families to come out in the fun-day atmosphere that will be created. We have the systems in place for that with trampolines and so on,” Joao said.
The Marketing and Sales Executive congratulated LGC, stating that the increase of local pool of players and the number of overseas registrants are encouraging for golf. Joao said that Banks DIH is pleased to be associated with golf.
“We want to welcome all of our overseas-based players to the premier golf tournament in Guyana. Golf is an extremely beautiful sport. We hope that the arrangements in place will bear the necessary fruit,” Joao continued yesterday.
LGC President, Mel Sankies called Banks’ support “excellent” before adding that there is a move to get more people involved in the sport. He said that would be propelled with the addition of another golf course in the country.
“The Course is in excellent condition and if the weather is like this (brilliant sunshine) at the tournament this weekend, we anticipate two days of very good golf,” Sankies told the media. He said he is expecting two good days.
According to Sankies, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony will Tee-off the tournament tomorrow morning.
