Four finals set for GCC tomorrow from 13:00hrs ending under lights
Die Hard XI of Essequibo and Rangers are scheduled to face off in a highly anticipated encounter when the final of the Mike’s Pharmacy Countrywide Softball Cricket Competition is contested tomorrow at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground, Bourda, under floodlights.
This is the culmination of weeks of exciting matches and the sponsors; Mike’s Pharmacy along with the Guyana Softball League has decided to make the occasion a special one, awarding prizes to several deserving teams as well as a few fans that have rendered unstinted support throughout the tournament. There will also be cash incentives and trophies for participating teams.
Die Hard won the right to be in the finals following a comprehensive victory over Safrax X1 over the past weekend. The match was contested in the Open Category. Die Hard XI won the toss and batted scoring 198-4 in 15 overs. Patrick Rooplall, recently adjudged most valuable player in the last countrywide competition, slammed an exciting century (123) which included some 15 sixes and was the best batsman on show for the winners.
Richard Patterson supported with 22 runs. Safraz X1 then replied with 169-8 in their allotted 15 overs even after Rohan Johnson lashed an enterprising 30 with support from Terry Ali (29). The Guyana Softball League is urging cricket fans to come out and witness the finals as the top teams in the country battle it out for the top spot.
Several other titles would be contested for tomorrow including the Under-15 final between Uitvlugt Youths and Zeeburg Warriors of West Demerara for the Kidicare Trophy, the over forty final for the Wellman Trophy between Shattaville Masters of West Coast and Trophy Stall Masters XI of Georgetown along with the highly anticipated female category final for the Wellwoman Trophy.
The two teams battling for this trophy are Heavenly Angels and Number 68 All Stars, both Berbice teams. These two teams have been involved in keen rivalry against some of the better teams in the competition with Heavenly Angels chalking up 3 wins while # 68 All Stars registered 2.
Action starts at 13:00hrs and continues under floodlights.
The tournament which was divided into four categories has witnessed competitive matches with each team making an enormous impact in each area.
In the open/regular category, some 143 teams have been involved while 29 teams competed for honors in the female division.
