Permaul grabs 5-98
as Berbice hunt win
against Demerara
By Sean Devers
Former Guyana under-19 pacer Keyron Fraser took 5-40 to bowl the Rest team to an emphatic innings and 49 runs victory over Essequibo with a day to spare at the Anna Regina yesterday in their final round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior 4-day cricket match.
Set 150 to make the visitors bat a 2nd time, Essequibo once again collapsed to 101 all out although the entire first session yesterday was washed out due to morning rain in Region 3.
The Rest team declared on their overnight 378-8 with the unlucky Deon Ferrier unbeaten on 58. Ferrier was 67 not out when GCB President Chetram Singh allowed the match between the Rest Team and Demerara to be discontinued because the final day had to be abandoned to facilitate a Primary school day of sports on the ground although the GCB claimed that they were given permission to use the venue for 4 days.
The win takes the Rest team to 21 points and once Demerara fail to beat Berbice today in the other match at Everest they will finish as runners-up ahead of Demerara and the winless Essequibo who continue to be an embarrassment at this level.
Ferrier who picked up 3 wickets in the first innings, added 2 more with his off-spin in the 2nd and got support from Ryan Ramdass 2-0 as Essequibo just got past the three-figure mark after making 226 in their first innings. Keon Baksh was again the top scorer with 30.
At Everest, Berbice already assured of the title, finished the penultimate day on 42-0 needing another 237 to win outright on the final day.
Demerara, who made 248 in their first innings, began the 3rd day on 119-0 after Berbice had made 304 in their first innings and both overnight batsmen wasted opportunities to score centuries on a slow track.
Chris Barnwell added just 16 to his overnight 67 while his opening partner Rajendra Chandrika (36 overnight) fell 15 short of becoming the first batsmen since Berbician Leonard Baichan (132 &101 vs Demerara in 1982) to score 2 tons in the same match at this level.
It took an attacking 40 from Troy Gonsalves and 26 each from Joseph Perry and Skipper Zaheer Mohamed to lift Demerara past the 300 score.
Both Barnwell and Chandrika were removed by left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (5-98) while Royston Crandon, who got rid of Steven Jacobs (24) and Perry, took 2-60.
Skipper Assad Fudadin’s medium pace then accounted for the last 3 wickets leaving Berbice with an hour yesterday and the entire final day to register their 3rd consecutive win in the competition.
Permaul got rid of Krishna Deosarran (3) and Gajanand Singh in quick succession as the Demerara middle order failed to build on the 145-run opening stand while Leon Johnson’s bad patch continued when Permaul held a bullet-like straight drive inches off the ground, one handed, sending the unlucky ODI left-hander on his way for 7 at 206-4.
The lower order propped up the score in sweltering heat before the innings was wrapped up with the 2nd new ball.
Gonsalves smashed Brendon Bess for 2 fours and then pulled him out of the ground for a 6 before missing a wild slog at Fudadin to end the Demerara resistance.
Even if Demerara can register an academic win today they will move to 27 points and take the 2nd position in the competition, a draw or a Berbcie win will ensure Demerara finish only ahead of Essequibo.
