Dear Editor,
Having read Lin-Jay Harry-Voglezon’s letter, “African leadership in general is constrained by the psychology of wrongness”, (Kaieteur News 11/11/2009), I wonder if he knows he has shot himself in the foot or his analytical mind caused the admittance. Either way, confession is good for the soul. The AFC African leadership may be unsettled with this honesty and frankness! Harry’s conclusion has been the concerns of many African Guyanese who have given their votes to Raphael Trotman, Sheila Holder, Cathy Hughes and Dennis Patterson.
Don’t tell me about African leaders in the PPP. Those leaders are being rewarded for their votes, subservience and support for the PPP oppression of their fellow Africans. Their rewards are akin to Africans who supported the government prior to 1834. I am concerned with the behaviour of Trotman, Hughes, Holder and Patterson which aptly fit West Indian philosophers CLR James’ description of the “parasitic class” and Frantz Fanon’s “Black Skin, White Mask.”
Don’t forget it was the AFC who specifically campaigned on the promise to bring races together and represent the rights of all. In Guyana Review (30/10/2009) Gerhard Ramsaroop says the AFC “First and foremost subscribe to the concept of liberal democracy which is tightly tied to protection of individual rights…and secondly [the AFC is] genuinely multi-ethnic.” As seen so far the protection of individual rights and multi-ethnicity only benefit the AFC Indian through the representation of Ramjattan and Ramsaroop. From Trotman, Holder, Hughes and Patterson, nada! Absolutely no representation from this quarter in as much as more than 90% votes came from Africans. At the beginning of this year I complimented the AFC for its promised national campaign to educate people on their rights. That was just pure talk, nothing was done by the AFC, but Ramjattan said Guyanese know their rights. He must be speaking about Indian-Guyanese who can rely on him, Ramsaroop and the PPP for representation.
Now, if African leaders feel constrained, are cowards or think they can take African votes and give them no representation this African will not allow it. With Harry’s diagnosis of the social disease it can now be cured by getting African leaders to become filled with the spirit of psychological rightness.
The votes won by the AFC were given with the understanding that Parliamentarians will get duty free vehicles every three-year, a fat salary and a handsome pension at the end. In return Africans expect their individual rights to have representation. No one expects these leaders to collect their parliamentary largesse and give the people no representation.
The time to emancipate from mental slavery is now. The world’s power-couple is a brother named Barack Obama and a sister named Michelle Obama and there’s no mistaking their identity and pride, since both make no bones about letting it be known that they are Black and proud! So impressed is the world with this power-couple some letters writers had the audacity to link Jagdeo to Barack. If the AFC African leaders need a front or a mask they have the best in the Obamas!
Harry identified some anti-social behaviour of the Blackman and asked if I know what’s responsible. Like Harry I don’t have all the answers. Similarly, I don’t have all the answers why another group dominates in anti-social behaviours like drug kingpin, suicides, robbing the Treasury, corruption, tortures and killing others over land dispute. These problems can best be tackled by the university, interest groups and political leaders. I warn Harry these social ills will not divert attention from African rights and representation, which the AFC is failing to do. No smokescreen will work!
Osafo Modibo.
